and now..........Diversity Grant!!

(The following is excerpted directly from the June Nutshell of OSUAA)

"We are strengthened by nurturing and embracing individual differences."

The Ohio State Alumni Association has embraced diversity as one of its core values. In keeping with this idea, OSUAA has created a diversity programming grant for our alumni clubs and societies. Our diversity efforts focus on gender, racial/ethnic differences, and sexual orientation.

A wide range of programs are considered each year for the grant, but each recipient program reflects at least one of these ideas:

  1. Fosters the elimination of discrimination
  2. Celebrates diversity and a variety of ethnic traditions
  3. Connects the community through education and/or interactive activities that promote a more culturally diverse or inclusive community.

Following are the winners of this year's grants:

  • Ohio State Alumni Club of Austin (TX): The club will partner with the Hispanic Technology Institute of Austin to assist in fostering economic development in Austin's Hispanic community.
  • Ohio State Alumni Club of Erie County (OH): The club will promote educational opportunities for Lation youth inconjunction with a mariachi performance, including a pre-concert lecture.
  • Ohio State Alumni Club of Greater New York: The club will create and annual "education month," featuring events to bring awareness of underprivileged and underserved youth, as well as aim to eradicate the disparity in public education.
  • Ohio State Alumni Club of New Mexico: The club will assist with the 2010 Indigenous Soccer Cup/National Native Youth Summit which helps to develop positive Native American youth leaders.
  • Ohio State Alumni Club of New Orleans (LA): The club will work with a local education collaborative to host a mixer for New Orleans school staff and to publish an educator resources notebook.
  • Health Sciences Management & Policy Alumni Society: The society will create a Women's Leadership Forum to help women students and alumni to network and connect with other female healthcare executives.
  • Navy ROTC Alumni Society: The society will partner with the Ohio State African American Alumni Society to bring selected minority students to campus for tours and events and show them the benefits of attending Ohio State.

One of only five clubs nationwide, we were awarded our first Diversity Grant!  On November 6, 2010, we will be partnering with The Lange Trust of the Sandusky Library.  Lange will be sponsoring a concert, !VIVA! MEXICO Los Camperos de Nati Cano.  Our Club has contracted with Nati Cano to present a pre-concert demo to cover the history of Mariachi as it relates to the history of Mexico, what mariachi is, its cultural significance, the instrumentation and how it differs from American instrumentation.  A committee has been formed by our club comprised of all local high school and college Spanish teachers as well as the local Catholic churches to encourage the Latino population's interest and attendance at this event.  More on our grant as the date of the concert nears.
